Which FDA page applies at home?
FDA says its consumer disposal page is for patients, family members, and home health caregivers. The agency says that page is not for healthcare facilities. Facility containers are covered in the separate FDA healthcare container guidance.
What does FDA tell a household to do first?
Place needles and other sharps in a sharps disposal container immediately after use. Keep that container out of reach of children and pets. Do not reuse a sharps disposal container. FDA says overfilling raises the chance of a needlestick and points households to the container mark at about three-fourths full.
Where can a household take the sealed container?
Community programs differ. FDA tells households to check local trash or health-department guidance. Options it names include drop-off sites, household hazardous waste collection sites, and mail-back of certain FDA-cleared containers, usually for a fee. Do not assume a clinic contract accepts household containers.
What should a clinic do with its own sharps?
Clinic sharps stay on the facility path: an OSHA container, a vendor who has agreed to the stream, and a quote that names the rooms and volume. Start with sharps container rules. Do not send patient names, prescriptions, or medical records with a facility enquiry.
What this page does not offer
MedSafeWaste does not collect household sharps, operate a drop box, or choose a community program. For a facility, use the quote form. For a home, use the FDA page and the local program.
